He talks football the way he played it…

I have to admit that I was awfully biased odds to Graeme Souness. His disastrous spell as Liverpool manager following the resignation of Kenny Dalglish, it was the catalyst for the decline and eventually the fall of the red empire. They say that a wise man is somebody who learns from his mistakes and definitely Souness has improved with age, like the very special red wines. He matured, to be precise. And as the football expert in most of SKY SPORTS live games his opinions have proved to be so good and so spot on, that you suddenly realise that you are watcing the match from a different point of view.

 What makes the 58 year old Scot a very rare beast is that he talks about football the same way as he played it. Uncompromisingly hard but with elegance, precision and above all vision. He was, after all, the best passer of the ball in the early part of the 80′s but he could provide a sublime pass, after a ferocious tackle! The same way he talks on television. He doesn’t give a single damn if he will upset anybody, even the people he played or worked with. And as the newspaper INDEPENDENT pointed out recently, “he is not one that keeps living in his own glory playing days”. He loves football and he has no hesitations to admit the bleeding obvious that for an example the current Barcelona side is better than Ajax of the 70′s, Milan of the late 80′s or his own Liverpool team of the early part of that decade. At the same time though he has no fear for saying what he thinks and if that does not go down well for Ser Alex, for Arsene or Kenny, he is simply not bothered. For years I thought that the best in this pundit role was Alan Hansen, but based on recent performances the past two seasons, give me Graeme Souness any time!
